A mirror inside a gallery wall behaves differently from a picture. It is heavier, it is usually larger, and its surface changes with the viewer's position. Plan it as the anchor: place it first, size everything else against it, and check what it will reflect before a hole is drilled.

Place the mirror first and lock it

The mirror is the least movable element in the group, so it should be positioned before any frame. Fix its centre height, mark its rectangle, and lock it in the plan so later adjustments cannot nudge it. Everything else is then arranged relative to a fixed object rather than everything competing at once.

Rectangular and arched mirrors in a group

A rectangular mirror is the easiest case because its bounding box is its true shape, so it can align edge to edge with frames. Use that: align the mirror's top with the top of an adjacent frame column, or its bottom with a row, and the group gains a straight reference line that a round mirror cannot provide.

An arched mirror is a hybrid, rectangular below the spring line and curved above it. Treat the lower portion as a true edge for alignment and the upper curve like a round mirror, allowing extra visual clearance at the two top corners. Aligning an arched mirror's flat bottom edge with a row of frame bottoms is usually the strongest move available.

Entryway and hallway mirrors

In an entryway the mirror is used, not just seen, so its height is functional. Set its centre near the standing eye height of the people who use it, which you measure rather than assume, and check the top edge clears the tallest household member's eye line. A mirror hung as decoration at 60 inches often fails as a mirror for anyone over six feet.

Where a console sits below, hold 6 to 10 inches between the console top and the mirror's lowest point, and keep the mirror no wider than the console. Coat hooks are the other constraint: allow for a hanging coat, which projects further than the hook itself, and keep frames out of the swing path of the front door.
