Viewing distance decides the frame size
Most corridors are 36 to 42 inches wide, and once you allow for your own body the furthest you can get from the wall is roughly 24 to 30 inches. At that distance a 24 x 36 poster is read in pieces rather than as a whole image, while an 11 x 14 sits comfortably in view. Measure your corridor before choosing anything, because 6 inches of width changes the answer.
Keep the working range between 8 x 10 and 16 x 20 in a genuinely narrow hallway, and save larger pieces for the point where the corridor opens into a room or a stair hall. The exception is the wall at the far end of a corridor, which is seen from the full length of the hallway and can take a single large piece that would be unreadable along the sides.
One centre height, repeated all the way
Pick a single centre height between 57 and 60 inches and apply it to every frame in the run, including the small ones. A corridor arrangement succeeds or fails on that one repetition, because a moving viewer registers the line before registering any individual image. Three clusters at three different heights is the most common hallway failure and it cannot be rescued with better spacing.
Where frame heights vary a lot, a shared top line can read even more strongly than a shared centre. Choose one rule and hold it for the whole corridor. In the planner, select every frame, align on the middle or the top, then distribute horizontally so the gaps are computed rather than eyeballed, and lock the row before you start adding anything else.

Keep the frames shallow
Frame depth is a practical constraint here, not an aesthetic one. Hold profiles under 1.5 inches and prefer 0.75 to 1 inch, because deep box frames and shadow-gap mouldings project into the space where shoulders, bags and coat sleeves travel. The frames nearest a corner or a doorway take the most contact and should be the shallowest pieces in the run.
Fit felt bumpers to the bottom corners of every frame. In a corridor the wall gets knocked constantly, and a bumper is what stops a frame slowly walking out of level between one month and the next. Two fixing points do the same job: a D-ring pair holds a frame square where a single central hook lets it pivot with every passing knock.
Door swings, switches and the walking envelope
A door leaf sweeps an arc with a radius equal to its own width, so a 32-inch door needs 32 inches of clear wall from its hinge plus room for the handle. Enter that swept area as a door obstacle rather than measuring only the closed leaf. Doing this before generating a layout is the difference between a plan that works and a frame that gets struck twice a day.
Corridors also collect switches, thermostats, alarm panels, entry phones and smoke detectors, each of which needs about 3 inches of keep-clear and none of which can be moved. Add them as obstacles or no-drill zones, then run constrained auto fit: it respects the clearances and names any frame it could not place, which is more useful than a layout that silently overlaps a switch plate.
Sequencing a series along the corridor
Hallways suit sequences because they are experienced in one direction. Identify the dominant direction of travel, usually from the front door inward, and order the images along it: chronologically, geographically, or by subject, but on one axis only. Two competing orders in the same run read as no order at all, and the effect is lost at walking pace.
Vary orientation on a strict rhythm rather than at random. Alternating portrait and landscape every other frame, or in pairs, keeps a long run from becoming monotonous while still reading as a system. Leave one full gap free at the end of the sequence so future additions extend the run instead of forcing you to re-space and re-drill everything already hung.
Lighting and glare in a corridor
Hallways are usually lit from a fitting directly overhead, which sends light down onto glazed frames at a steep angle and straight back at whoever is walking underneath. Test it before drilling: after dark, with the corridor lit as it normally is, have someone hold a glazed frame at the intended centre height while you walk the full length and note where the bulb appears in the glass.
Daylight brings the opposite problem. A window or glazed door at one end throws a hard rectangle of light along the wall, and any frame sitting inside that patch will mirror it for part of the day. Non-reflective glazing solves the worst positions; matte prints and unglazed canvas solve the rest. Directional fittings aimed along the wall rather than down it also help.
Where the run should stop
End the run 8 to 12 inches short of a corner or a door casing. Frames that crowd a junction are seen edge-on and never read properly, and the crowding is what makes a corridor feel narrower than it measures. If the arrangement continues onto a return wall, treat it as a separate composition that happens to share the same centre height rather than extending the same row around the corner.
Check the fixed obstructions at both ends before you set the length: radiators, coat hooks, meter cupboards, and the stair string all take wall that looks available on a drawing. Measure the true clear span first, subtract the end margins, and only then divide the remainder into frames and gaps. That order avoids re-planning the whole run once the first frame is up.
