Start at the headboard, not the mattress
Measure the headboard at its widest point and target an arrangement between 60 and 90 percent of that width. A queen headboard around 62 inches gives a 37 to 56 inch band; a king headboard near 80 inches gives 48 to 72 inches. Centre the group on the bed centre line rather than the wall, because bedrooms are routinely off-centre thanks to a door swing, a radiator, or a built-in wardrobe on one side.
Without a headboard, the pillow stack becomes the reference instead. A 25-inch mattress top plus a normal pillow stack reaches roughly 36 inches, and the same 8 to 12 inch clearance then puts the lowest frame bottom between 44 and 48 inches from the floor. Measure your own bed made up as you actually leave it, not stripped, because the difference between a bare mattress and a dressed bed is easily 8 inches.

Clearance and weight above the pillows
Leave 8 to 12 inches between the highest point of the headboard and the bottom edge of the lowest frame. Anything closer gets knocked every time the bed is made, and anything much further away breaks the visual link to the bed. Measure to the top of finials or a tall upholstered crown, not to the flat panel behind them, or the gap you planned will not be the gap you get.
Keep the mass down. Acrylic glazing weighs a fraction of glass at the same size and is the obvious substitution for anything directly over a pillow. Prefer slim profiles over deep box frames, and weigh each finished frame before choosing hardware. Verify what the wall is actually made of, then select fasteners rated comfortably above that weight for that substrate and follow the hardware manufacturer instructions exactly.
Choosing hardware for the wall above a bed
Two fixing points beat one. A D-ring pair resists rotation, so the frame stays level when the duvet is shaken; a single centred sawtooth lets the same frame pivot a degree at a time until somebody notices it months later. A cleat spreads the load along the frame width and holds the piece flat against the wall, which also reduces the shadow gap over the bed.
The planner stores four hardware models: frame edge, centred sawtooth, centred wire, and a D-ring pair. Frame-edge coordinates need only wall and frame geometry. A drill or hook mark additionally needs measured offsets, so record the drop from the frame top, and for D-rings the inset from each side. Wire is labelled estimated unless you measured the drop with the wire pulled up under the frame weight.

Asymmetric clusters on the side walls
The wall beside a bed is almost never symmetrical, because there is usually a door on one side and a window on the other. Rather than fight that, build an asymmetric cluster with one strong straight edge: align every frame to a single vertical line on the side nearest the bed and let the outer edge step in and out. That one shared line does all the work that symmetry would have done.
Stop the cluster about 4 inches short of the bed footprint so it never sits over the mattress, and keep the pieces smaller than the above-bed group so the two arrangements do not compete. Three to five frames between 5 x 7 and 11 x 14 is usually enough on a side wall, and the same centre height used above the bed keeps the room reading as one plan.
Bedside lamps, sconces and switch clearance
Hold 4 inches between the widest point of a lamp shade and the nearest frame edge, measured with the shade in its actual position rather than pushed against the wall. Swing-arm sconces need the whole arc treated as a keep-clear zone: trace the outer radius the arm reaches when fully extended and enter that as an obstacle, because the arm will be extended at some point.
Reading lights throw upward as well as down, which puts a bright band across the bottom of any glazed frame directly above them. Test it before drilling by holding a glazed piece at the intended height with the lamps on and the room lights off. If the bulb reflects back at you from the pillow position, move the frame sideways or switch that piece to matte glazing.
A calmer palette than the rest of the house
Bedrooms usually want less contrast rather than fewer pieces. Two frame finishes maximum, one mat width repeated across the whole set, and a narrow tonal range in the images does more for calm than reducing the frame count would. Wider mats read quieter than narrow ones at the same frame size, so a 2-inch mat on an 11 x 14 will feel more restful than a 1-inch mat on the same frame.
Black and white photography, botanical plates, and tonal abstracts all hold together at low light levels, which is when this wall is actually seen. Strong saturated colour reads as noise at 6am and reads as noise again from the doorway. If you want one accent piece, put it at the centre of the arrangement and keep everything around it neutral.
Check the view from the doorway
You never see the wall above your own bed while lying in it. The above-bed arrangement is read almost entirely from the doorway, typically 10 to 14 feet away, and at that distance a 5 x 7 frame collapses into a smudge. Use 11 x 14 as the minimum for the outer pieces and reserve smaller frames for the side walls, where people stand within arm reach of them.
The wall you do look at from the bed is the one facing it, usually behind a dresser or a television. A cluster there is viewed reclining, so drop its centre nearer 50 inches instead of the usual 57 to 60. Sit on the bed with a paper template taped up before committing, because this is the one arrangement in the house judged from a pillow.
