What humidity does to paper and mats
Paper is hygroscopic: it takes up moisture from the air and gives it back, and it changes dimension as it does. In a room that reaches condensing humidity several times a day, that shows up as cockling, the visible rippling of a print inside its frame, and as mats that bow away from the glazing. Neither is reversible once the print has been through enough cycles.
Two further effects appear over longer periods. Condensation can form on the inner face of the glazing and, where a print is in direct contact, the emulsion can stick to it, which destroys the print on separation. Damp mounting board also encourages foxing, the small brown spots that show through pale areas of an image. Assume the pieces in a bathroom are consumable.
Sealed backs, open backs and where you assemble
A sealed backing slows moisture exchange in both directions, which helps until moisture gets in, at which point it also slows drying. An open-back frame lets the print equalise with the room, which reduces condensation trapped against the glazing but leaves the paper exposed. Neither option is protection; they trade one failure mode for the other.
Whichever you choose, assemble the frame in a dry room on a dry day, so the air you seal in is as dry as it will ever be. Assembling a sealed frame in the bathroom itself locks damp air against the print. If a piece does start to ripple, take it down, open it in a dry room and let it flatten under weight before reassembling.
Choose art you are willing to lose
The practical strategy is replaceability rather than protection. Use inexpensive prints you can reprint from a file, keep originals, signed work and anything of sentimental value out of the room entirely, and expect a two to three year life from paper pieces in a heavily used family bathroom.
Pieces printed on materials that do not absorb water behave better here than framed paper does, and unglazed options avoid the condensation problem altogether at the cost of exposing the surface. A rotating approach also works: hang four pieces, keep spares flat in a dry cupboard, and swap when one starts to ripple rather than trying to rescue it.
Drilling tile and grout
Where the wall is tiled, place fixings in grout lines wherever the layout allows. Grout is easier to make good later, and a mistake in a grout line does not mean replacing a tile. This constraint often decides frame positions, so map the grout grid before finalising spacing rather than after.
Where a tile face cannot be avoided, use a bit intended for tile, follow the bit manufacturer's guidance, and start slowly with masking tape over the spot so the tip does not wander across the glaze. Turn off any hammer action. Most importantly, bathroom walls commonly carry pipework and services, so have the wall construction and what is inside it verified before drilling anywhere.
Composition on narrow bathroom walls
The wall above a cistern is often only 18 to 30 inches of usable width, which is one column or a tight pair. Three 8 x 10 frames stacked vertically at 1.5 inch gaps come to 33 inches tall and 8 inches wide, which fits almost any such strip and reads as deliberate. A pair of 11 x 14 frames side by side at 2 inch gaps needs 24 inches.
Leave enough clearance above the cistern to lift the lid straight out: measure the lid and add 2 inches, which usually means keeping the lowest frame edge 10 to 12 inches above it. The wall beside a vanity is often the better site anyway, since it is further from both the shower spray and the steam plume.
Towel rails, glare and vanity lighting
Hold 8 to 10 inches between a towel rail and the lowest frame edge, measured with a towel hanging, not with the rail empty. A wet towel is a local humidity source as well as a physical one, so a frame directly above a rail gets a harsher environment than the same frame two feet away.
Vanity lighting is usually bright, close and aimed at the wall, which makes glazing reflections worse in a bathroom than in most rooms. Matte glazing is the straightforward fix. Check the effect at night with the vanity lights on rather than in daylight, because that is the condition the reflections will actually appear in.
Ventilation and placement
Placement inside the room matters as much as framing. Avoid the wall directly opposite a shower where spray carries, avoid hanging above a bath, and prefer the wall nearest the door where air exchanges most. A piece two feet further from the shower can last considerably longer than an identical one beside it.
Run the extractor during showers and for a period afterwards, and leave the door open once the room is free, so the humidity peak is shorter. None of this makes paper permanent in a wet room; it lengthens the interval between replacements, which is the realistic goal.
