Weigh the piece before you choose a method
Every damage-free product is sold against a published weight limit, and every failure story starts with an estimate instead of a measurement. Put the framed piece on kitchen or bathroom scales, glass and backing board included, and write the number on the back. A 16 x 20 frame with glass is heavier than most people guess, and the difference between guessing and weighing is the difference between a rating you can rely on and one you have already exceeded.
Do this before you buy anything, because the weight decides the method rather than the other way round. Light unglazed prints and canvases open up almost every option below. Anything glazed, deep-moulded, or larger than about 16 x 20 pushes you towards a rail, a ledge, or a proper fixing — and a rental that forbids fixings is a reason to change the artwork, not to overload a strip.

Adhesive strips: read the pack, not the internet
Interlocking adhesive strips are the default no-nail route, and their limits come from the manufacturer rather than from any general rule. Each pack states its own weight allowance, how many strips a given size needs, the surfaces it is approved for, and the exclusions. Those exclusions do most of the work: textured paint, wallpaper, brick, vinyl, and paint that has not fully cured are commonly listed as unsuitable, and a wall that fails one of them will fail regardless of the weight.
Preparation and patience are the two things people skip. Most packs ask you to clean the wall with isopropyl alcohol rather than a household spray, press for a stated time, then leave the fixing for an hour or more before loading it. Removal is equally specific: pull the tab straight down, slowly, in line with the wall. Pulling outwards is what takes the paint with it.

Adhesive hooks and where they differ from strips
An adhesive hook carries the load on a single small pad and hangs the frame from its existing sawtooth or wire, so the frame can be lifted off and rehung later. That is its advantage over strips, which bond the frame to the wall and have to be replaced to move it. The trade-off is that a hook leaves the frame free to swing, so it needs a levelling check more often and benefits from a felt bumper at each bottom corner.
Because a hook uses the frame's own hardware, the hook height still has to be calculated the same way as a nail: frame bottom edge, plus frame height, minus the measured drop from the frame's top edge to the hanging point. The hanging calculator will do that arithmetic for a row of frames, and nothing about it changes because the fixing is adhesive rather than driven.
Picture rails and hanging systems: many frames, no new holes
A picture rail changes the arithmetic completely. One fixed component, whether an original moulding, a modern track, or a rail sitting on existing rail brackets, carries the entire arrangement on cords or hooks that slide. Twelve frames stop being twelve fixings and become zero. Heights become continuously adjustable, which is why galleries use rails and why they suit a wall you expect to rearrange.
The visual consequence is that every frame hangs from the same line, so the tops sit at a common height unless you deliberately vary the cord lengths. That favours a linear row or a grid over a loose salon cluster. If your building already has a rail, plan the layout around it as a fixed constraint from the start; if it does not, installing a rail is itself a fixing decision that needs the landlord's agreement.

Ledges, shelves and leaning
A narrow picture ledge converts an arrangement into one or two fixings and then lets you rearrange freely, which is often the honest answer for a rental. Frames lean back against the wall on a lipped shelf, overlapping slightly, and the composition can change monthly without touching the wall again. Depth matters more than length: a ledge shallower than the deepest frame's moulding will not hold it at a stable angle.
Leaning is a legitimate layout rather than a compromise. A large piece on a mantel, a console, or the floor behind a sofa reads as deliberate when it is the largest thing in the group and everything else is arranged around it. Check the lean angle against anything that will be walked past, and use a museum-gel pad or a discreet stop where a frame could be knocked forward.
Walls where nothing adhesive will hold
Some surfaces defeat adhesives outright, and no amount of preparation changes that. Brick and rough render give the pad too little continuous contact. Textured or heavily patterned paint has the same problem at a smaller scale. Wallpaper transfers the load to the paste rather than to the wall, so the paper peels before the strip lets go. Freshly painted walls need weeks of curing, and the pack usually says so.
There are still no-drill answers on those walls. Brick clips grip the mortar course and hold a light frame without a hole. Tension rods and freestanding easels avoid the wall altogether. On tile, a rail fixed into the grout lines does less harm than any face fixing. Where none of that works, a leaning arrangement on furniture is the option that never fails an inspection.

Planning a gallery wall you can take down
A damage-free constraint should change the layout, not just the fixings. Fewer and larger pieces mean fewer fixings to fail and less to remove at the end of a tenancy, and a linear row or a clean grid tolerates the height limits of strips and rails better than a dense salon cluster does. Keep the heaviest piece at the bottom of the composition, where a failure has the shortest distance to fall.
Plan the geometry the same way you would for nails: fix the arrangement centre height, take every horizontal measurement from one datum, and tape paper templates before committing. A pencil datum line and low-tack tape are themselves removable, so nothing about the damage-free requirement stops you working accurately. Then keep the coordinate table, because it is what lets you rebuild the same wall in the next flat.
