Decide what the wall is about before printing anything
The strongest family walls have one organising idea. Grouping by era means the wall runs chronologically, which works best as rows read left to right with each row covering a period. Grouping by event means each cluster is a wedding, a trip or a summer, with the clusters separated by slightly wider gaps than the pieces inside them.
The third option is a single-generation portrait wall: one photograph of each person, printed at the same size, in identical frames. It is the easiest version to keep coherent and the easiest to extend, because adding a person means adding a known unit rather than solving the composition again.
Mixing these approaches is where family walls get muddled. A wall that is chronological on the left and thematic on the right gives a viewer no rule to follow, and it will feel disorganised to everyone who looks at it without anyone being able to say quite why.
Plan for growth from the beginning
Family walls grow. Children arrive, people marry, photographs get rediscovered in a box. A wall that fills its space perfectly on day one has to be dismantled the first time something is added, which in practice means the addition never happens and the photograph stays in a drawer.
Reserve capacity deliberately. Hang seven to twelve pieces where the space could take ten to fifteen, and keep the spare positions together as a column at one end or the outer row of a grid, rather than as scattered holes. A grid extends by adding a column far more gracefully than by squeezing a frame into the middle of it.
Record the geometry so a later addition is arithmetic rather than guesswork. Save the project to the browser and export the JSON file so the exact frame sizes, gap value and coordinates survive the next two years. Photographs placed into frames are read locally by the browser and never uploaded. Adding a frame then means duplicating an existing one, dropping it into the reserved column, and printing a fresh install sheet.
Print sizes and crops from phone photos
Phone cameras usually shoot 4:3. Common print sizes do not match that: 8 x 10 is 4:5, 11 x 14 is close to 4:5, 5 x 7 is 5:7, and 4 x 6 is 2:3. Every one of them requires a crop, and the crop happens whether you choose it or the lab chooses it for you at the point of printing.
Crop deliberately, before ordering. Going from a 4:3 file to an 8 x 10 print means losing roughly a fifth of the long edge, which is enough to cut off a shoulder or the top of a head. Open each image, set the target ratio, and move the crop box yourself rather than accepting a centred default.
The alternative is to let the mat absorb the difference. Print at the native ratio and mat the print into a larger outer size, so a 6 x 8 print sits in an 11 x 14 frame behind a wide mat with the full image intact. That is usually the better answer for older scans and irreplaceable pictures.
Resolution: the arithmetic, not a rule of thumb
The calculation is simple division. Pixels along an edge divided by the printed length of that edge in inches gives pixels per inch. A 4032-pixel edge printed at 12 inches is 4032 divided by 12, or 336 PPI. The same file printed across 20 inches is 202 PPI. No other input is involved.
300 PPI is the usual print target and holds up at arm's length. 150 PPI is generally acceptable for larger prints seen from a couple of metres away, which is how most gallery walls are actually viewed. Below about 120 PPI, softness becomes visible at normal room distances and the print starts to look like an enlargement.
In practice a 12-megapixel phone photograph at 4032 by 3024 pixels prints comfortably to about 13 x 10 inches at 300 PPI, or up to 26 x 20 inches at 150 PPI. Older five-megapixel files and scanned prints run out sooner, so put those in the smaller frames rather than enlarging them and hoping.
Mixing portraits with landscapes
Most family photographs are portrait orientation because that is how people are photographed, but a wall of only portraits reads as a row of documents. Aim for roughly two portraits to every landscape and place the landscapes where the eye needs a break, at the ends of a long row or in the middle of a dense cluster.
Two landscape frames stacked with a gap can occupy the same vertical space as one portrait frame, which is a useful move for keeping rows aligned when orientations differ. Alternatively, mat both orientations into a square outer frame so the arrangement stops caring which way any individual image runs.
Keeping a mixed-quality set coherent
Family sets are inconsistent by nature: a 1970s scan, a 2004 compact camera file, a recent phone portrait. Three fixes do most of the work. Convert the whole set to black and white, which removes clashing colour casts at a stroke. Print the weakest files small, where their limitations are least visible. Use one mat colour throughout so the pieces share something.
Frames can carry the coherence when the images cannot. Identical frames across a mixed-quality set is the most reliable way to make it read as intentional, which is why a plain grid remains the default for family walls despite being the least adventurous option available.
Hanging it, and adding to it later
Hang from the centre outward, starting with the anchor or the largest cluster, and above a sofa or console keep the arrangement to roughly two-thirds of the furniture width. Print the install sheet at 100 percent and check both calibration bars before marking. Frame coordinates come from the wall bottom-left corner, and drill positions depend on the hardware you enter, whether that is a centred sawtooth, a wire measured under load, or a D-ring pair. Verify wall construction and fastener ratings before drilling.
